Sappy – Overly sweet or sentimental (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
Anyone who knows me well
Knows there are moments when I could be described as being sappy.
Voice catching.
Tears in my eyes.
I found myself thinking about this because of my social media feed.
A month or so ago, I spent a moment reading a story that appeared on one of my accounts about a college student who, on the spur of the moment, brought home a fellow student who had no place to go for their holiday break trusting that her parents would understand and make space at the table.
“How nice.” I thought.
In the midst of the other shouting which fills my social medial feed, the story brought a smile to my face.
Then the algorithms kicked in.
And, AI.
Now, similar stories regularly populate my social media feed.
But, the truth is I don’t mind.
I know most, if not all, of the stories are AI generated.
Stories about kids sharing a sandwich.
About college students befriending another
About neighbors going out of their way to help each other out.
Compassion rearing its head.
(Sappy?) kindness spilling over.
Strangers treating another with respect and concern.
All AI generated.
All made up.
And yet, all of them true.
Not in he specific way the social media story goes.
But, those kindnesses do, in fact, happen.
A million times each and every day.
And, that is what I like about the stories that push their way onto my social media feed.
They remind me
That despite all the other headlines designed to fuel my anger and outrage
That kindness still matters.
And compassion makes a difference.
And seeing the other as not all that different from myself.
All of it matters.
And all of it makes a difference.
