O God,
More often than not
I flounder.
And stumble.
And lose my way.
I forget
Who.
And why.
And what is important.
My only hope is this.
That you take who I am today
Just as I am today
And bless and break and give
Like you did with fish and bread so long ago
And scatter whatever I have to offer
Fling it out there
Into that world
You continue to love so very much.
Amen.
A Prayer for a Summer Sunday Morning

And so we pause long enough to pray, O God.
Slowing down long enough;
Stopping long enough;
To pay attention
To the state of our own hearts and minds and souls.
And pay attention to our sisters and brothers;
And to the world entrusted now to our care and keeping.
To pay attention to the sadness and sorrow and despair which robs so many of the life you intend for us and for all. And, to pay attention to the gratitude and joy and love which makes life rich and deep and full.
And we pray for one another and for those beyond our reach may we pray, too, for ourselves as we seek to faithfully walk in the way of Jesus who claimed, even in the face of death and all death’s works and wiles that love wins. God’s love wins. May our lives reflect that promise and that truth.
Amen.
Rich Beyond Measure

O God,
My life is rich beyond measure.
The truth is I should walk through each moment
With a Thank You on my lips
And with gratitude spilling out of my heart.
That being true
Which, without a doubt, it is
Forgive my complaints.
And more than that, forgive my indifference;
An indifference which casts a blind eye toward beauty;
And walls my heart against the world.
Amen.
A Sunday Morning Prayer Good For Any Day
Prayer is an opening of the self so that the God can break in and make us new. Prayer unmasks. Prayer converts. Prayer impels. Prayer sustains us on the way. (I read this this week, but forget where.)
Our hopes.
Our dreams.
Our tears.
Our love.
Are all prayers, O God.
Sometimes we wrap them words.
Most of the time not.
Always they are held carefully and deeply in our heart and mind and soul.
Then pushed out towards you;
And towards those whom we love;
And to those who find themselves in need;
And into the world entrusted now to our care and keeping.
We take this moment;
Just as it is and just as we are;
To open up our hearts;
And to be open to your presence;
And in whatever we we might or are able to pray.
A Prayer for Palm Sunday

For good reason, O God, our prayers often start close to home.
For those whom we know.
Those whom we love.
Those whose lives are intimately intertwined with our own.
A fraction of whose names we can say out loud.
Countless others fill and sometimes break our hearts.
We remember all of them now calling on that which we know of You and Your abiding presence and surrounding their lives with all the love and hope and strength and support we can muster. And so we pray, O God.
And pushing our lives and prayers further, we remember all those places into which Jesus rides today, not with grand procession and triumphant shouts, but often unnoticed or unnamed, but present still.
Damascus.
Gaza.
Barcelona.
Dusseldorf.
Damasak.
Tikrit.
If only they knew those things that make for peace, O God.
If only we knew those things, O God.
And so we pray.
Not alone, but together as Your people gathered in this place.
For health.
For hope.
For comfort.
For peace.
Amen.
A Prayer for Today

In this moment, O God, we ask to be reminded.
Reminded that all fall within the circle of your care and concern.
Reminded that all are to fall within the circle of our care and concern.
Reminded, too, that we are to see not only what is, but, also, what might be.
Remind us that we are to be agents and angels…
Of peace.
And of hope.
Of reconciliation.
And of compassion.
Doing what we can…
What we are called to do…
To bring that distant day close.
And so we pray…
Not just upward, but more importantly outward…
Wrapping our prayers around those whom we know and have named;
And, around all that has been entrusted to our care and keeping and so many more which we would remember and name in this moment. And added to all that this, too, O God. May our lives follow where our prayers first lead.
Amen.
