Most mornings, along with our almost two year old dog, I walk on a pathway, not far from our home, which parallels the Patuxent River.
Most days it is a quiet walk.
Besides the exercise, I often use the time to meditate or to pray.
Or sometimes just to take a deep breath and allow it to settle within me.
I often walk with my eyes looking down.
Not just to see where I am going,
But more, to look within me
And to take note of who I am and how I am.
While all that is important.
Because many times those moments help to keep me balanced.
The downside is I don’t see and or notice what is around me.
The sunshine reflecting off the wet leaves after last night’s storm.
Or the heron standing in the water on the edge the river.
Or the way the leaves are just beginning to change color and fall.
This morning, after I told myself to lift my head,
I found myself wondering…
Do we live each day the way I often walk.
Looking down.
Looking inward.
Paying attention to the small space around us.
And not seeing
Not noticing
Who or what is in that larger circle around us?
Praying as I walk
And, paying attention to who and how I am
Is important.
But so is lifting my head and looking up.
