He is a neighbor.
And a professional photographer.
He was setting up his camera in front of the church.
Walking by, I stopped to say hello.
“I was going by the other day about this time,” he said.
“And I noticed the moment when the setting sun glinted off the cross on top of the steeple.”
Having seen it, he now was setting up his camera to get a picture of it. I have walked by that same spot thousands of time and never saw what he saw.
It reminded me of the time I visited a friend who lived in Colorado Springs which is located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. I walked out his front door and the mountains seemed like they were right there. I walked around that day with my mouth and eyes wide open. My friend hardly noticed the beauty outside his door which took my breath away.
How often does that happen in our lives?
How often are we blind to what is RIGHT THERE?
The beauty?
The grace?
The kindness?
The other?
Watching him set up his camera reminded me of how much I am blind to.
And made me wonder…
Maybe realizing we are blind is the first step in learning to see.
