I am struck by the contrast.
One one side stands the shouting crowds and the angry faces.
Chose whatever side you want.
Pro life.
Pro choice.
Gay rights.
Religious freedom.
Aliens.
Immigrants.
Send them home.
Leave them alone.
On the other side are the pictures of those who line up to help.
Schools supplies donated for local children.
A bag of groceries dropped off to help feed a family.
Those who line the German roadways with water and food for those who have left everything behind in the desperate hope of something better in some place they have never been.
I find myself wondering about the distance between us.
And, what it would be like if it were just you and me.
And we could sit down and talk.
About our children or grandchildren.
About our joys and our sorrows.
The successes in our lives.
And the failures.
About our hopes for the future.
And about what makes us afraid.
I wonder…
Would we end up with clenched teeth and shouting at each other?
Or, at the end of our conversation would we help each other up?
And, in whatever way we might,
Offer our blessing to each other?
