I am trying to learn to build furniture.
In the past couple of years I have tried my hand at several smaller projects.
A plant stand.
A coffee table.
A coat tree.
Recently I started my most ambitious project to date. Building an armoire for our bedroom.
I am halfway done and here is what I already know.
If I make something like this again I will design it differently.
While I have been careful with all my measurements and cuts, a couple of the joined pieces are not quite square.
Learning to use new tools takes time. I used a router for the first time in years and it shows.
Walnut is a beautiful wood. I love the way it looks and feels and smells.
When I am finished it will be easy for me to look at what I have built and notice all the imperfections. Those places where my lack of expertise is evident.
But what I realized this afternoon as I was sanding several pieces before putting them together is that the imperfections are going to be minor next to the beauty of the wood. And, I need to pay attention to the beauty.
And that is true of more than learning to build furniture.
