I am told I should respect the President because he is the President.
I disagree.
We should respect the Office of the President.
Yes. And, I do.
Just as we should, in general, respect police officers and first responders and teachers and janitors. But, individuals in any of those positions also need to earn the respect of others. A police officer who assaults someone does not deserve our respect. A clergyperson who abuses children or engages in sexual misconduct does not deserve our respect. A teacher who belittles his or her students does not deserve our respect. The same is true for the person who has been elected and who holds the office of President of the United States.
It may be different for you than it is for me, and if it is that is your call.
But, for me belittling others does not earn my respect.
Disrespecting the position and competence and hard work of another does not earn my respect.
Consistently blaming and pointing fingers when another expresses a differing opinion does not earn my respect.
When that respect is lost, we all lose.
