I shared this quote by Joan Chittister with a group of young adults with whom I am in contact every week.
“Goodness is a process of becoming, not of being.
What we do over and over is what, in the end, we become.”
The quote raises a provocative question.
We are used to responding to the question of who we are.
I am a husband.
I am a father.
I am a grandfather.
I am a pastor.
I am a runner.
I am a reader.
But that is not what is being asked, is it?
What is being asked is “Who am I becoming?”
A year from now…
Five years from now…
Not what will I be doing, but what type of person would I like to be.
I would like to listen better than I do.
I would like to be more patient with myself than I often am.
I would like to laugh more.
And, if that is who I would like to be, how do I begin to practice that today?
That is the million dollar question.
