This morning a friend sent me this article which, beyond a brief introduction, is the commencement speech given by author George Saunders to the 2013 graduates of Syracuse University. The article and the address are just what I needed to hear this morning. Saunders speaks about kindness and includes this sentence:
“Because kindness, it turns out, is hard – it starts out all rainbows and puppy dogs, and expands to include…well, everything.”
And, included in that everything, I realized this morning, is me.
Just as I am.
Trying hard.
Succeeding sometimes.
Regularly falling short of the expectations I have for myself.
Often too self critical.
As well as being kind to my family and to my neighbors and to the check out person at the grocery store, I need to be kind to me.
Sometimes that is the hardest thing for me to do.
