Representative of the Presbyterian Church USA (of which I am a member) begin their biennial gathering today in Detroit. From my one experience at such a gathering, the next week will be wonderful and messy and tiring and political, and maybe even at moments inspiring. Complicated issues will be discussed and debated including divestment and marriage equality. In the end, there will be winners and losers; those who are satisfied with the outcomes and those who will go home broken and hurt.
I am not sure what to say about such gatherings.
Maybe only that, in the end, everyone leaves at least a bit dissatisfied and unsettled because no matter what happens or what is said or who wins and who loses, we will have fallen short of who we are called to be and short of what, I believe, God intends for us and for all.
