Somewhere I heard this about shepherds.
Instead of leading the way, with flock following obediently behind,
In reality shepherds bring up the rear.
Herding the sheep in front of them.
Making sure the flock stays together and continues to move in the desired direction.
You can imagine what that is like.
Dusty.
Smelly.
Constantly chasing the stragglers and the stays.
While we most often celebrate those who are out in front and who lead the way,
Today, I am grateful for the shepherds.
Those who bring up the rear.
Who do the dirty work.
The hard work.
Of keeping track of the likes of you and me.
Making sure we stay together.
And stay the course.
And find our way.
