What a difference a year makes.
Last year at this time, on my Facebook feed, friends were posting videos of flash mobs singing a Christmas carol or the Hallelujah Chorus. And, I was being invited by any number of people to post a picture or a short reflection based on a series of words associated with Advent.
Angels.
Star.
Hope.
Peace.
This year…none of that.
No lists.
No pictures.
No flash mobs.
At least not yet.
Instead there are screenshots of tweets and stories from Standing Rock and screams from Aleppo and account after account of a Muslim or a Jew or a Latino or an African-American being harassed or threatened or attacked.
While a part of me would like it all to be nice and for us to respectful to each other, my hunch is the world into which Jesus was born was more like today than like a flash mob Christmas carol.
