The day started off pretty well, but, by 10:00 I had a headache.
The squeaky blower fan outside my office?
Advent bulletins to get done so I can think about Christmas Eve bulletins?
The phone call from my Mom?
The email which begins with “I know you are busy, but…”
Two days into Advent and I had already I had lost my way.
Then there was this.
One of the readings from the Bible that is assigned to Advent.
The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
Prepare the way of the Lord…
It’s all about the wilderness.
It’s all about where we live.
About the push and pull of life as it is.
The demands.
The expectations.
The unmet and impossible to meet expectations.
The crazy man shouting on the plane.
The graffiti spray painted on the walls of the mosque.
Or on the sidewalk on the way to the school.
Advent.
Christmas.
God.
Peace on earth.
Isn’t about finding something
Or creating something
Outside of the wilderness.
Some separate reality apart from it all.
But, of living in the midst of all the craziness.
And, there.
Right there.
Just where you are.
Preparing the way.
Not to find a way out
But for God to find a way in.
