I like to think of myself as well read and well informed.
I do my best to stay abreast of the news and what is happening in the world around me.
But, today I am sick and tired of it all.
I am sick and tired of finger pointing and the blaming and the political maneuvering.
I am sick and tired of stone throwing and the bomb making and the guns pulled to shoot another human being.
Maybe it is just me.
Maybe it is just today.
I usually have a better internal buffer which blunts the awfulness that fills the pages of the newspaper I read each morning and the headlines that scroll through the news feeds on my computer during the day.
Is what I read really who we are?
I know what the news reports is true (for the most part).
I know what I read is what some people do to each other whether out of fear or desperation or craziness or some combination of all of that and more.
But…
Is this really who we are as human beings?
God, I hope not because if it is I give up.
Not really…
Give up that is.
Because the bottom line is I continue to believe there is far more good in the world than evil.
Far more kindness than cruelty.
Far more compassion and understanding that hatred and prejudice.
We just don’t hear about it like we hear about all the other stuff.
And, we don’t see it unless we REALLY try.
And, I guess that is the point.
Can we make the conscious decision to see and to hear what is really there behind all the clutter and through all the noise?
To see something of the goodness.
To see something of the humanity.
To see something of the dreams that each parent has for their children.
To see something of the dreams each person has for himself or herself.
I am convinced it is there…even in (especially in?!) those places and situations which appear to be the darkest and the most divisive.
Today, I am not doing a very good job of taking my own advice.
Time to take a deep breath and to try again.
